What Advise Do You Give To People About Credit?

I encourage everyone to stop using credit except in limited circumstances. Credit is an expensive way to buy things since you add interest to the cost. If you can eliminate interest from your family's budget you will have more money to buy things, to save for emergencies, children's education, retirement, or even your dream vacation. If you are debt free, you will be as prepared as you can be to meet your basic living expenses if you lose your job or have a medical problem - since you would not have to worry about bill payments on credit items.

If you aren't too far in debt, then a reputable credit counseling agency might help. You might try a budgeting plan and look into a program such as Dave Ramsey's debt reduction plans. I would encourage you to at least consult with a good bankruptcy attorney before trying those programs so that you can compare what a bankruptcy attorney says with the solutions offered by repayment plans. Sometimes people are encouraged to try to repay debt that they really can't repay, or they sacrifice their financial stability trying to pay the debts, even by agencies who are reputable and trying to help.
